| The first of two scrolls detailing the names of the Mount Royal staff and students who served in WWII. |
Designed by Group of Seven artist A.J. Casson when he was part of the War Records Committee, the ink and gouache template features the Royal Coat of Arms of Canada, a gilded sword and the inscription: “For King and Country, Members of Mount Royal College who have volunteered for active service with Canada’s fighting forces.”
The scrolls, along with the World War I “Roll of Honor,” have been displayed in various locations throughout Mount Royal’s history.
In 1997, the former manager of Custodial Services, Stu Gauthier, discovered that they had fallen into disrepair. A military veteran himself, Stu personally donated $1,100 to preserve and mount the parchments, saying, “If you lose your past, you lost your future.” They are now currently on display in the Alumni Relations office.
Since Mount Royal was founded in 1910, hundreds of our students, employees and alumni served in the First and Second World Wars, as well as in several United Nations military operations. Research has found 27 who gave their lives for our country.
Of the 16 Mount Royal soldiers who died in WWII, 12 were members of the Royal Canadian Air Force, and most were in their early 20s.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

We shall not forget
In 2010, Mount Royal launched the Centennial Military Memorial project, creating memorial scholarships in honour of each of our fallen soldiers. These scholarships will recognize their sacrifice while furthering the learning and the dreams of 27 Mount Royal students — today and tomorrow.
At Mount Royal’s first annual Military Memorial Ceremony on Nov. 8, 2011, in Ross Glen Hall, Retired General John de Chastelain, Honorary Chair of this project and a Mount Royal Distinguished Alumnus, presented 27 students with the inaugural Military Memorial Bursaries.
