 MRU jackets

Be true to your school

Being identified with a school like Mount Royal has always been a matter of pride, and the owners of these two vintage athletic jackets from the 1950s no doubt wore them as a badge of honour across campus and around town.

The blue and white leather jacket, in Mount Royal’s school colours, was donated by former Calgary Herald writer Larry Wood. The jacket features Larry’s name on one sleeve, the British and Canadian flags on the other, and a curling crest with rock and broom on the back.

Wood, who was on the editorial staff of The Reflector student newspaper in the mid-50s, had high hopes of becoming a journalist, according to his Varshicom yearbook description. He went on to achieve a celebrated career as a sports columnist who is particularly well loved for his curling commentary.

The red cloth jacket features a crest celebrating Mount Royal’s win in the Intercollegiate Hockey Championship during the 1959/60 season, as well as the number 11 between the Canadian and US flags on the sleeve. Until this point, football had been the big sport on campus, but it seems that hockey was poised to take over.

Since 1965, Mount Royal has won 13 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) men’s hockey championships, including a hard fought 2010/11 series against the SAIT Trojans this spring.

With an impressive track record, Mount Royal’s Cougar Athletics is still a huge part of campus life today and boasts 12 award-winning men's, women's and mixed sports teams in basketball, hockey, soccer, volleyball, badminton and golf.
