A stitch in time

Designed and hand-stitched in 1935 by Miss Margaret Lamb Carrick, who was Dean of Women and House Directress at the time, this tapestry captures Mount Royal’s first 24 years of history.Mount Royal tapastry

At the top of the tapestry, the incorporation date, 1910, is displayed prominently, and the central image is the institution’s crest and motto, Quam Bene Non Quantum — not how much, but how well.

Supporting the crest in scarlet is the legendary tree of life, and the name of Mount Royal’s founder and first principal, G.W. Kerby, appears at its base.

Other motifs include the lamps of learning and crosses signifying the college’s Christian roots.

The words “Junior College” celebrate the institution’s affiliation with the University of Alberta in 1931.

The tapestry, which has been fully restored and currently hangs in the Mount Royal boardroom, is one of the few surviving artifacts from the original downtown campus.

Its images remind us of the history and values of Mount Royal — including quality, vibrancy and a love of learning — which are all still relevant today.
