This advertising scrapbook features clippings of Mount Royal newspaper advertisements from roughly 1940–1951. Most of the ads appeared in The Albertan and The Calgary Daily Herald.
Featuring faculty announcements, music recital notices and Mount Royal’s academic offerings — from first-year university courses, high school and commerce to speech, drama and music — the ads offer insight into the school’s evolution throughout a key decade.
Some ads, such as one for secretarial training, make lofty promises: “Your Daughter Will Command a Better Salary with Mount Royal Training.”
Others are more informational, explaining the junior college’s affiliation with the University of Alberta, instructors’ credentials, and the benefits of completing the first year of university at Mount Royal.
The ads, all painstakingly clipped and pasted into the scrapbook, offer a careful record of the changing face of Mount Royal, which has always strived to meet the shifting needs of students and the community.
This page regularly showcases the collections of the Mount Royal University Archives. Thanks to the Director of the Archives, Patricia Roome, PhD, and her staff for their assistance in selecting artifacts and conducting research.
