When Mount Royal University was incorporated as a college in 1910, it was shaped by the innovative, inclusive and inspiring ideas of our founding principal, the Rev. Dr. George Kerby.
Since then, Mount Royal has continued to nurture ideas — fresh ideas, smart ideas, provocative ideas.
As part of the University’s centennial celebrations, Mount Royal presented Legacy of Ideas, a speakers series featuring renowned thinkers with big ideas.
Each inspirational speaker engaged audiences in open dialogue, debate and introspection.

World-renowned graffiti artists Cey Adams (New York), Pat Lazo (Winnipeg) and TheKidBelo (Calgary) joined up to create a street art piece based on the theme “learning from our past.” Over three days, in an event presented in partnership with the Students' Association of Mount Royal University, these artists explored new methods of sharing unconventional ideas. The resulting piece is now on display inside Mount Royal’s West Gate entrance. This kick-off to Legacy of Ideas also featured an evening of street art, street performers, music, and visual effects by mash-up DJ Girl Talk, with Shamik and Cadence Weapon.

In conjunction with the conference Under Western Skies, a round-table panel discussion featuring Dr. Vandana Shiva, Maude Barlow, Andrew Nikiforuk, Leo Jacobs, Bron Taylor and Richard White focused on learning from our past to protect our environment in the future.
