Historic stained glass

Commissioned by the Reverend Dr. John H. Garden, Mount Royal’s second principal, this set of four stained glass windows was originally installed in the chapel at the Kerby Memorial Building in the 1950s.

Three of the windows honour founding members of the Mount Royal Board of Governors: William G. Hunt, Henry Marshall Jenkins and Dr. Arthur Melville Scott.

The fourth window — based on a painting of Jesus Christ by William Holman Hunt and entitled The Light of the World — is dedicated to James H. Garden, the architect and builder of Mount Royal’s original campus.

The windows are the creation of Toronto-based Robert McCausland Ltd., the oldest stained glass studio in North America.

A place to shine

The windows were moved to the Lincoln Park Campus in 1972, where they were displayed in various locations as the campus expanded until they found a permanent home in the East Arts building in 2009.

The four stained glass windows now hang in the central stairwell surrounded by three-storey high windows facing southeast — an ideal location to celebrate both their remarkable craftsmanship and their historical significance.
