Buy a transit pass and cut your tax bill

Transit users who buy passes that last at least a month are eligible for a non-refundable tax credit.  You can claim the full amount of the transit passes for you, your spouse, your common law partner and children under 19 years of age.

The U-Pass is eligible for this tax credit. You will not need to submit any documents when filing your claim, but you should keep a proof of payment in the event the Canada Revenue Agency wishes to conduct a tax audit.

If you have been assessed a U-Pass fee, you can print off a statement showing this fee through myMRU.ca.  Once you have logged in, click on "Online Services", the "Student" tab, "Pay Fees, Pay Deposits, and Account Summaries", "Account Summary by Term".  It is recommended that you keep this receipt for 5 years.

To find out more about the Tax Credit for Public Transit Passes program, visit the Canada Revenue Agency website at www.cra.gc.ca or visit www.transitpass.ca to calculate how much you can save.
