Mount Royal’s Institute for Nonprofit Studies supports national research grants for graduate students
(CALGARY – June 30, 2009) The Institute for Nonprofit Studies at Mount Royal is pleased to announce its first Graduate Student Research Awards for Canadian nonprofit and social economy graduate students.
The two Graduate Student Research Award winners for 2009 are:
• Suzanne Cook, University of Toronto, a PhD Candidate who is studying the transition between work life skills and volunteering in retirement; and
• Andreas Gouldsborough, Concordia University, a PhD student who will critically evaluate the practice of community participation in the social economy
The Institute views investing in future nonprofit scholars as crucial to the development of a scholarly community in Canada and the capacity of these scholars to connect research with communities. Each recipient will receive a cheque for $2,500 and funds to support their attendance at the Association of Nonprofit and Social Economy Research Conference in Montreal in June, 2010.
In 2010, the Graduate Student Research Award will continue to be funded by the Institute for Nonprofit Studies and will become the ANSER Graduate Student Research Award. ANSER is the Association of Nonprofit and Social Economy Research, representing scholars and researchers across Canada who are active in nonprofit and social economy research.
Newly elected ANSER President Dr. Jack Quarter of the University of Toronto says, "ANSER is delighted to see the initiative being taken by Mount Royal College to foster nonprofit research in Canada. The new ANSER Graduate Student Award funded by the Nonprofit Institute will help to highlight the importance of nonprofit and social economy research to all graduate students across Canada. It's a great step forward."
