Mount Royal University responds to provincial Budget 2017

In response to the release of Budget 2017, Mount Royal University President David Docherty provided the following statement:

“There were no surprises in today’s provincial budget. In that sense, we appreciate the Alberta Government’s willingness to work with us in a transparent and open manner.

The two per cent increase in our Campus Alberta grant translates into a positive increase of nearly $2 million. Unlike the past two years, there were no funds to offset the tuition freeze. Although anticipated, this decision carries a negative impact of about $1.1 million.

In the coming weeks, we will incorporate the specific provincial budget inputs and complete the latest round of adjustments to our 2017/18 budget. An update will be provided to our community in early April. Work will continue on the draft budget until it goes to the Board of Governors for approval in May.

In the longer term, we will continue to participate in provincial reviews of tuition and mandatory non-instructional fees. Sustainable and predictable funding remains vital to the health of our sector.”
