Mount Royal University celebrates the opening of a new Nursing Simulation Learning Centre

(CALGARY — April 5, 2011) Mount Royal University’s School of Nursing invites media to attend the grand opening of a new Nursing Simulation Learning Centre at 10 a.m. on Thurs., April 7, 2011 at the West Gate, Leacock Theatre foyer to the Terrace Room.

Media are invited to join Simulation Learning Centre staff and Mount Royal Nursing students for tours of the new facilities and for demonstrations using Human Patient Simulators.

Member of the Legislative Assembly for Edmonton – Rutherford and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Health and Wellness, Fred Horne will bring greetings on behalf of the Government of Alberta.

The creation of the School of Nursing Simulation Learning Centre took two years from inception to final construction.

It is a safe, simulated practice environment that promotes critical reflection and transformative learning of the knowledge, skills and attributes for professional health care practice.

“This new Simulation Learning Centre is critical to nursing in the future,” says Pam Nordstrom, director of Mount Royal’s School of Nursing.

“Within this simulated environment, students can learn with state-of-the-art equipment. As technology evolves we will be able to immerse students into a variety of realistic situations.”

Key information about the Simulation Learning Centre:
• 10,880 square feet
• Four simulation suites (Three single and one double patient care room):
     o AV capture throughout
     o Four individual control rooms
     o Four debriefing/multipurpose rooms
• Six — eight bed clinical classrooms
• One home environment containing living room, bed room, washroom facilities, ceiling lift
• Access to Alberta Health Services electronic health record training database
• One — ten station computer lab
• Gaumard Human Patient Simulators
     o Two adult HAL
     o Two adult Susie
     o One pediatric HAL five year old
     o One Noelle birthing simulator
     o One newborn simulator
     o One preemie simulator
