Mount Royal University appoints the ninth president in its
100-year history

(CALGARY – March 10, 2011) The Board of Governors of Mount Royal University has officially announced that their search for a new president has reached its conclusion. Mount Royal University is pleased to announce that the ninth president in its 100-year history will be David Docherty, PhD.

Docherty’s presidency at Mount Royal will commence on Aug. 1, 2011.

“I am thrilled to be moving to Mount Royal to take on the responsibilities of President. I have been aware for years of the stellar reputation of Mount Royal University as an institution that excels in teaching and learning. One of the defining features of Mount Royal is the commitment of its people — faculty, students and staff. All groups share a desire for excellence in and out of the classroom and I am honoured to be joining the University,” says Docherty.

Docherty comes to Mount Royal from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, ON, where he is currently Senior Advisor on Multi-campus Initiatives in the Office of the Vice-President: Academic and Provost. An honours graduate in political science in 1984, Docherty served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts from 2005 to 2009.

A recognized expert on parliamentary democracy in Canada, Docherty has been instrumental in developing new undergraduate programs at Wilfrid Laurier. In 2005, he was named the Faculty of Arts Teaching Scholar for his integration of scholarly research and teaching.

“Docherty’s unanimous selection as president was the result of a rigorous international search that included input from faculty, student and staff representatives,” says Richard Shaw, chair of Mount Royal University’s Board of Governors. “His appointment is one more exciting milestone as Mount Royal celebrates its centennial.”

Mount Royal’s current President, Dave Marshall, announced last May that he will be stepping down from his post on June 30, 2011.

"I am very pleased that Mount Royal has been able to find such a distinguished and accomplished academic and administrator as David Docherty,” says Marshall.

“I'm especially pleased to see that Docherty comes from Wilfrid Laurier, a university with such a wonderful reputation for undergraduate education. His experience and knowledge are just what Mount Royal needs to continue its aspirations of being the top ranked university in Canada on all measures of student success and satisfaction. I look forward to being part of the very warm welcome I know Docherty will receive at Mount Royal."
