Appointments, Promotion and Tenure Committee (APTC)

Mandate

The mandate of the Appointments, Promotion and Tenure Committee is to recommend to the General Faculties Council the criteria, policies and procedures concerning appointments, promotion and tenure of faculty members. The terms of reference are subject to any provisions in the Collective Agreement between the Mount Royal Faculty Association and the Board of Governors of Mount Royal University.

APTC Terms of Reference

  • Develop and recommend the institutional criteria and recommend the detailed criteria developed by the Faculty Councils pertaining to appointment, promotion and tenure of faculty members to the General Faculties Council.
  • Ensure that the criteria and other work undertaken by the APT Committee integrate and align with the processes resulting from the collective bargaining process.
  • Review the outcomes of the bargaining process to determine if there is any additional work that needs to be undertaken to fulfill the overall mandate of the APT Committee and respond as necessary.
  • Liaise with the MRFA on issues of common concern and responsibility.

Activities and Outcomes

In fulfillment of its mandate, the APTC has worked closely with the University community over the last three years to develop policies and procedures concerning appointments, promotion and tenure of MRU faculty.

Institutional Tenure and Promotion Criteria

In May, 2010, the Board of Governors approved the Institutional Tenure and Promotion Criteria, which it is believed will help attract, retain and reward faculty who share MRU’s institutional vision, and will help make Mount Royal a Canadian university of choice for undergraduate education.

Detailed Tenure and Promotion Criteria

The approval of institutional tenure and promotion criteria necessitated the development of detailed criteria at the faculty- and discipline-specific level. Starting in 2010-2011, the APTC has worked with the faculty councils in order to bring forward the detailed faculty recommendations. The committee has followed an iterative process, including multiple reviews of faculty submissions, with feedback and requests for resubmission as appropriate. Specifically, the APTC has reviewed each faculty’s recommendations for:

  •  clarity;
  • consistency with the already-adopted institutional criteria;
  • articulation of potential forms of evidence with respect to the criteria, where appropriate;
  • articulation of standards with respect to the criteria and forms of evidence, where appropriate;
  • equitability with respect to other faculties, to the extent possible.
