Sustainable MRU

MRU Waste

Waste BinsPLEASE NOTE: Immediate attention is required as the Landfill stream will be financially penalized beginning in 2017 if it contains Paper or Cardboard items.

Great news! 4-way disposal bins have been implemented on campus.

These bins feature 4 separate compartments or 4 bin groups:

  1. Mixed Recycle (like your Single Stream Blue Bin from home)
  2. Refundable (Bottles & Cans, etc. where MRU receives the revenue)
  3. Paper/Cardboard (if the bin set is near a student study area)  OR  Organic (if the bin set is near a food service area)
  4. Landfill

These bins will help all members of the Mount Royal community divert unnecessary waste from the landfill.  In an effort to eliminate paper and cardboard from the landfill waste stream, the City of Calgary has passed a bylaw that subjects businesses and institutions that have paper in their landfill collection bins to higher rates ($).  This law will take effect on November 1, 2016.

If you cannot see a Paper/Cardboard bin near by, please place paper or cardboard items into the Mixed Recycle bin, NOT the Landfill bin, as paper is accepted in Mixed Recycle.

It is our hope that Mixed Recycling and Organic Recycling will displace 75% of the on site waste going to Landfill eventually, as the campus population gets better at separating their items into the appropriate waste streams.
