Changes to parking at Mount Royal

All parking permits — except Evening/Weekend passes for the Fall semester —
are sold out as of July 6. Find out about your options.

Parking has had to change because of overcrowded lots, construction on campus and growing numbers of students and employees.  Mount Royal is:

  • starting construction on a new 1200-stall parkade, scheduled to open in 2010.
  • increasing the number of day lots and short term lots so you can drive some days and walk, cycle or take transit on others.
  • offering more environmentally sustainable options such as more carpool stalls, new bike racks and lockers, and more day lots and short term lots.

The new parking model was developed after consultation with stakeholders including students, faculty and staff.  It includes three new permit tiers — open lot, gated lot and parkade. These replace the old "student" and "employee" permits.

Cost changes

The cost of parking on campus is going up. We recognize that this is difficult news at the best of times — even more so during difficult economic times.

This increase is unfortunate but necessary because, by law, parking at Mount Royal cannot be funded by government grants or tuition fees — it must generate funds to cover its operating costs through permit sales. Increasing demand for permits, and the need to pay for the parkade —estimated to cost $45 million — have both resulted in increasing permit prices.

Each permit tier in the new system provides a different level of service and the cost is based on benefits such as location, permit-to-stall ratio and/or plug-ins.

This graph compares the new parking rates at Mount Royal for 2009-2010 with prices at other Calgary institutions during the 2009-2010 year.
