quote_schaeferHarry G. Schaefer picture Harry G. Schaefer was known for his passion for mentorship — sharing his knowledge and experience while challenging those he mentored to step out of their comfort zones, to reach higher and to achieve their full potential.

Schaefer was skilled in recognizing untapped potential, and many of Calgary’s business and community leaders benefited from his sharp mind and inquisitive nature.

A chartered accountant by trade, Schaefer spent most of his career at TransAlta in a number of financial roles, culminating in the role of Chief Financial Officer, which he held until his retirement in 1993. With his expertise in financing and corporate takeovers and his leadership on corporate governance and ethics issues, Schaefer served as Chairman of the Board of TransAlta for five years ending in 1996. He also served as director and audit committee chair of many corporate boards including TransCanada Corporation, Telus, Agrium, Fording Coal, Sun Life and Mount Royal University.

Harry G. Schaefer passed away on October 23, 2011.
