English as a Second Language (ESL) programs

Who can apply for funding?

Alberta Works grant funding is available for full-time eligible students who demonstrate need for one of the following English as a Second Language programs:

  • English Foundations (EF Level 1, 2, 3)
  • English for Academic Purposes (EAP Level 1, 2, 3)
  • English for Advanced Communication (EAC Level 1, 2)

Also, you must need English as a Second Language training to reach your employment or education goal and you must have taken all Language Instruction for Newcomers (LINC) (free ESL) training you are eligible for.

If you are not sure if you are eligible for LINC classes, please take your Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) test at the Immigrant Language and Vocational Assessment - Referral Centre (ILVARC)

I meet the eligibility requirements. What are my next steps?

Contact the Languages Institute at 403.440.5100 to register for one of the following Fall 2012 information sessions:

  • May 23, 2012
  • June 6, 2012
  • June 13, 2012

At the session, you will receive a funding application package, detailed instruction on how to fill out the funding application and making an assessment appointment once your application is complete. You will also register for, and take, an ESL placement test in the afternoon. This test is designed to place you into the appropriate Mount Royal ESL level only.

You must attend an ESL funding session in order to receive the application package.

What will I need to bring with me to my assessment appointment?

  1. A fully completed funding application package.
  2. Documents showing you are no longer eligible for LINC.
  3. Appropriate immigration documents.
  4. IQAS assessment or other certification or licenses you have applied for in Canada (e.g. CGA/ CARNA/ ATA/ APEGGA).
  5. Printed profile from www.alis.gov.ab.ca : OCCinfo /EDinfo/CERTinfo for your chosen occupation.
  6. Permanent residents (landed immigrants) must provide a copy of the following documents:
    Permanent Resident Card
    Immigration paper (IMM5292)
  7. Refugees must provide a copy of the following documents:
    Notice of Decision
    A study permit valid for the entire school term
    A work permit valid beyond the school term
