Red Hot Cougars sweep GriffinsIf the rest of the ACAC didn’t know about the Mount Royal University Cougars offence, they sure do now.
On Friday night, the Cougars men’s hockey team routed the visiting Grant MacEwan Griffins10-3 on home ice at Calgary’s Centennial Arena.
Just 13 seconds into the opening frame, the Cougars would open the scoring as Coleton Thielman took a beautiful pass from Barry Horman and put it past Griffins ‘keeper Wade Waters to make it 1-0 Cougars.
The Griffins would tie the game at 1-1 just seven minutes later as defenseman Andrew Coles netted his first goal of the season.
The team would exchange blows mid-way through the second to tie the game up at 2-2, before the Cougars offence exploded, scoring 7 unanswered goals.
Markers by Horman, Thielman, Brenden Turnbull (2) Matt Laminrande, Dustin Kimber and Ernie Stewart paced the Cougars offence as they produced their highest output of the season.

Cougars goaltender Jordan McLaughlin was strong in net, as he turned away 15 of 18 shots, as the Cougars badly outshot the Griffins 53-18.
The Cougars would end up winning the game by a total of 10-3, including three powerplay goals.
In Saturday evening’s rematch, the Griffins were the first on the board, as Jordan Stevenson’s powerplay marker open the scoring for the evening.
The Cougars would responded with goals just three minutes apart as Jordon Harrison notched home his 5th goal of the season, just minutes before Horman fired home his seventh goal, a shorthanded tally to make it 2-1 Cougars.
A second shorthanded marker by rookie Carey Koroluk would extend the lead to two as the Cougars took a 3-1 lead into the locker-room after the first.
The Cougars came out of the gate hot in the second period, as Brendan Turnbull rocketed one past Waters to make it 4-1 Cougars.
Joe Vetere would add one more powerplay goal for the Cougars, and the defense would hold tight, as the Cougars skated away with the 5-3 win, despite giving up 14
powerplay opportunities to the Griffins.
After 13 games of play, the Cougars sit in top spot in the ACAC with an 11-1-0-1 record, good for 23 points.
The Cougars have only three more games before the winter semester break, including an important matchup with the second place SAIT Trojans on December 4th.
Before the Cougars prepare for the Trojans, they’ll have to get past the Portage Voyageurs as they get set for a two game road swing in Lac La Biche, Alberta starting on Friday.
