Season outlook
The Badminton Team had some exciting and close matches throughout the whole 2010/2011 season and look to improve on this performance for 2011/2012.
The focus for the upcoming badminton season will be to improve placing at the Team Championship and battle for places on the ACAC Team for the National Championship in Kamloops.
Last season the team sent the men’s doubles tandemof Matt Chan and Greg Buckley to the National Championships in Sackville that finished in fifth place, and narrowly missed out on competing for third place by only a few points.
Entering the new season head coach Hayden Kowel has high expectations for the Cougars.
Leadership will not be a problem with the return of second year players Hailey Coakley and Matt Chan. Kowel is setting his sights on achieving success at the ACAC team and individual championships, and hopefully some players will earn the opportunity to compete at the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships in March.
The ladies side this season is lead by Coakley who narrowly missed out on a spot in the National Championship last season. As well, continued improvement of third year players Michelle Luong and Melissa Quan will be key.
North West Territories Canada Games Athlete Gillian Waugh and local player Zanecha Maribojoc round out the ladies side.
On the men's side, Male Rookie Athlete of the Year Matt Chan will lead a very improved group of second and third year players including Francois Auger, Keenan Ince, Braden Cross, and Evan Hendricks.
With six other male players, the team will have a number of strong players looking to earn a spot on the Tournament Roster by seasons’ end.
The Cougar Badminton Team looks forward to an exciting season and will continue to work hard to prepare to challenge for the ACAC Team and Individual Championships in February.
