Season outlook
Fresh off their silver medal success, this year’s Cougar women’s hockey team has high expectations for the 2009-2010 season. With 13 returning players, six rookies and two transfer students, this year’s team looks to have the right mix of experience and youthful enthusiasm.
“We really like what we were able to add to our line up this year. We added some of the top graduating players in each position and to top it off we were able to bring in two top end transfers who have each won two Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference championships in the past. That experience and leadership on and off the ice in combination with the rest of our veterans will hopefully help us get to our goal this season,” comments Rivett.
On the front end, the team will be looking for returning leading scorer Sharina Filion to have a big impact again this year and Chelsey Morrill who is coming off a spectacular playoff performance will be counted on to help pace the attack. Chrissy Hodgson, Madison Ouellette, along with transfers Chilla Fedoruk and Jaime Teichman, will be expected to produce as well. Emma Lowry and Nat Harding round the returning forwards and with their speed and tenaciousness, making them extremely difficult players to play against. First-years Michelle McDonald, Karlie Martens and Shyla Stadnicki all have looked terrific early on and will challenge for significant minutes as the season progresses. “All of our forwards have a unique combination of speed, skill and grit which should make for some exciting hockey,” says Rivett.
On the back end, the Cougars welcome two new faces as Kelsey Harder and Mari Ahvensalmi will wear blue and white this season. Ahvensalmi is the team’s first international player and has looked more comfortable with every game in the early season. Jess Legasse and Brianna Bird are poised to lead this group as these third- year veterans have developed into a couple of the league’s premier defencemen. Returners Michelle Ziegler, Kaitlyn Burke and Kelsey Green help to solidify this big and physical blue line for the Cougars.
In goal, the duties will be shared by returners Leanne Pfliger and Chelsea May. Kendall Kilgour is the new face behind the mask this year as she has returned to Canada after spending the past couple of seasons in the United States. All three have looked sharp in the early going and will push each other for the coveted starter’s role as the season progresses.
This should be another exciting season for women’s hockey in the ACAC. The team will have to adopt a disciplined, hard-working style of play in order to compete for the ACAC championship once again.
