Season outlook

With 17 players returning from last year’s squad, rookie head coach Tino Fusco has a nucleus to work with for the upcoming 2009 season. After finishing the season with an undefeated record of 8-0-2 and earning the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) bronze medal, the squad looks to find improvement reaching the ultimate goal – the CCAA national championship.

The squad is aiming for Brittany Ahearn to lead the team in attacking and will be looking towards Meghan MacDonald and Janelle Carbert to be an integral force in the attacking third. With the 2008 midfield still in tack for the upcoming season, Coach Fusco is looking to add some additional tricks and tactics to help his players achieve success through the centre of the park. Ashley Dixon, a CCAA all-canadian and ACAC female athlete of the year is back for her fourth season and is always a force. She will be supported by 2008 team captain Chelsey Ruckdashel. There are also the four conference all-stars returning from 2008: Brittney Ahearn, Janelle Carbert, Tina Basi and Kim Nielsen.

This season the squad had an abundance of goal keepers involved in pre-season camp and all continue to challenge fifth-year Rachel McConachy for the starting role.
The coaching staff has received interest from numerous potential recruits for the 2009 season which has improved the team’s depth. This year the coaching staff has decided to carry a slightly larger roster for competitive training and proper development for future years. With the most intensive pre-season to date for the program, the ride doesn’t get any easier.

Coach Fusco has high expectations for his squad: “I feel the standard had to be raised and the accountability placed on the players. I will take responsibility for any of the team loses but I need players to believe in our system and understand what is required to reach the highest level – the CCAA championship.”

The team looks to play an attacking entertaining style of football for the supporters with the team goal of achieving a playoff berth. The team hopes to host the playoffs on Mount Royal’s stadium field in October– and use the “twelfth man,” the Cougars supporters, to help achieve their goals. Every training session, every match the team continues to learn - taking one step at a time to advance and improve on last year performance.
