Combined 3-1 vs. Kodiaks

Jamie Morck gets better every game, and as she goes, so do the Cougars.

Morck shredded the Lethbridge College Kodiaks for 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead her team to a 74-58 win in front of the home crowd.

Through three games this season Morck is shooting a blistering 67 percent from the field, averaging more than 10 rebounds a game, and causing havoc for opponents around the net.

The Kodiaks played the Cougars close in the opening quarter, but simply couldn’t find their range on this night, shooting an abysmal 28 percent from the field, including 16 percent from behind the arc.

Carrie Pickering had an efficient game for the Cougars, scoring 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting and adding 8 rebounds. Guard Maria McKee added 10 points for the Cougars as they cruised to victory.

The Cougars visited a much more focused Lethbridge team on Saturday night, but were well prepared and kept their opponents in check as with a 67-62 win. The Cougars have now won their first four games of the 2010/11 season.

The Kodiaks played better defence in the second game of the home-and-home series and had a strong game from forward Natalie Johnson, but it wasn’t enough to topple the undefeated Cougars.

With their perfect record intact the Cougars will get a weekend’s bye before hosting a pair of home games versus the NAIT Ooks and Grand Prairie Wolves.

Cougar Men
Guard Steve Trinidad broke out offensively, Cam Dodd nearly posted a triple double, and the Cougars earned a tough three points.

Trinidad put up his best stat line so far this year with 25 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists to lead the Cougar men’s basketball team to a tightly-contested 84-83 win over the Lethbridge College Kodiaks.

The Cougars backcourt duo of Trinidad and Dodd scored 43 of the Cougars’ 84 points, and Trinidad was red-hot from downtown, making six of his eight three point attempts. Dodd finished with 18 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists to go along with 4 steals as he continues to impress on a nightly basis.

The Cougars fell behind early in the first quarter, allowing the Kodiaks to score the first seven points of the ball game. The Cougars fought back though, and finished the quarter on a 21-11 run. Despite the fact that the game was extremely close for the entire 40 minutes, the Cougars led after every quarter.

With Lethbridge’s former CIS forward Dom Coward giving the Cougars difficulties in the paint, Mount Royal had to rely on their backcourt scoring more heavily than usual.
The win brought the Cougars’ record to 2-1 on the season.

On Saturday, it was the same Dom Coward giving the Cougars headaches in the paint, as the former CIS forward scored 28 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the second game of the home-and-home as he led the Lethbridge Kodiaks to an 81-62 trouncing of the Cougars.

The Cougars had no answer for Coward on either end of the floor, and it’s clear that if the Cougars are going to compete on a nightly basis, they won’t be able to solely rely on their backcourt. The Cougars will need to establish a solid presence in the paint to counter powerful forwards like Coward.

Sporting a 3-1 record, the Cougar men will take a weekend off before hosting a pair of home games versus the NAIT Ooks and Grand Prairie Wolves on Friday, Nov 17th and Saturday, Nov 18th.
