
Mount Royal University will host the ACAC Badminton Championships this weekend, where the Cougars’ star and ACAC Men's Badminton Player of the Year Matt Chan will look to add an ACAC singles title to his resumé.
The tournament will begin on Saturday Feb. 12, with the men’s and women’s Singles Championships beginning at 10 a.m. Chan has won three of the four tournaments in the 2010/11 season, but was bested by the NAIT Ooks Kai Dan in the finals of last week’s competition in Red Deer. Chan will look to avenge his loss on Saturday.
On the woman’s side, NAIT Ook Sun Yang has been unstoppable this season, winning all four singles’ titles and Female Badminton Player of the Year honours. Laura Fong, who has a pair of fourth place finishes this season, will be the Cougars best bet in women's singles.
The men’s and women’s doubles championships will begin at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, and mixed doubles will follow at 4:00 p.m.
Team Championships will take place Sunday, Feb. 13 at 10:00 a.m.
The firstsemi final matchup will feature the top-ranked NAIT Ooks vs. The Red Deer Kings/Queens. The next semi final will pit the second-seeded Concordia Thunder against the hosting Mount Royal Cougars.
The gold and bronze medal games will begin at 1:00 p.m.
All weekend action will take place in MRU's Stanley Gynasium.
