Cougars named to All Canadian team; Pollock top coach

It was a big night for the Mount Royal University Cougars soccer programs, as three student-athletes were named CCAA All Canadians, and one coach named CCAA Coach of the Year.

Ashley Dixon, Gillian Doubleday and Justin Farenik were all awarded the prestigious honour, while men’s head coach Jamie Pollock was named the top bench boss across Canada.

The awards were given out on Tuesday, November 9th at the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association’s 2010 Big Kahuna Soccer Championships All Canadian Awards Banquet hosted by NAIT Ooks.

According to the CCAA mandate, “Each award recipient is selected by their individual conference based on their performance and contribution to both their sport and their team.”

Ashley Dixon
Dixon, a 5-foot-10 defender, is in her fifth year with the Cougars and is enrolled in the nursing program.The Airdrie native is one of the key reasons the Calgary squad finished the ACAC regular season undefeated with 10 wins while surrendering only four goals.

Gillian Doubleday
Despite her diminutive stature, 5-foot-2 Doubleday led the high-octane Cougars attack scoring 20 of the teams 50 goals. The fourth-year Calgary native is enrolled in open studies.

Justin Farenik
Cougar’s 6-foot-3 Justin Farenik stood tall as one of the 11 men’s All Canadians. This is the fifth year for Farenik, one of the best defenders in the ACAC.

TOP COACH

Jamie Pollock
Pollock coached the Royals to an 8-1-1 record this year with 39 goals for and six goals against.

In a media release CCAA’s Ray Sarkis, vice-president of programs, stated “ “Jamie Pollock is very involved outside coaching,” citing the Cougars "On the Court Program" in which Pollock’s student-athletes participated in the teaching of a physical education class for elementary school students.

The CCCAA 2010 Big Kahuna Men’s and Women's Soccer National Championships, hosted by the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), start today and run until November 13, 2010 at Fuhr Sports Fields in Spruce Grove, Alberta.
