Golf returns in the Spring

The golf season has come to a close, and although the 2011 Ping CCAA Golf National Championships in P.E.I. weren’t too kind to the Cougars, their season itself had its share of successes.

The east coast elements gave the golfers fits last week as they struggled in swirling winds and extremely soggy conditions. The tournament was shortened to two rounds after Thursday’s round was cancelled due to heavy rains.

The only Cougar male to finish in the top 20 at the tournament was Jeremy Vold, who shot rounds of 76 and 80 to finish in 20th place.

Lauren Schmidek finished in a tie for 13th place in the women’s draw, firing rounds of 86 and 95.

Although the nationals didn’t go as well as hoped for the Cougars this season, they can take pride in their ACAC successes.

Nathan Schurr took home the gold medal in the individual portion of the ACAC Championships, and the men’s squad took home silver, finishing six shots behind the MacEwan Griffins in team competition.

On the women’s side, Katie Benoit finished third in individual play, Maddie Pedersen came in fourth and Lauren Schmidek in seventh.

The Cougar women finished three shots behind the Griffins in team competition, taking home the silver medal.
