4-0 to start the season

The Mount Royal Cougars’ women’s hockey team is undefeated, and their top players look like they’re in midseason form.

Raylene Cutknife and Chrissy Hodgson each recorded a goal and an assist in the first game of the Cougars’ home-and-home series with MacEwan University, beating the Griffins 4-2.

Tash Ferrier and Chelsey Morrill also scored for the Cougars, who jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period, and never looked back.

Leanne Pfliger earned the ‘W’ in goal, registering her second win in two starts this season.

After beating the Griffins on their home turf Friday night, the Cougars returned to Flames Community Arenas eager to give their home fans another strong performance.

Chesley Morrill scored her second goal in as many games and added two assists en route to a 5-1 Cougar victory.

Raylene Cutknife, Taralynn Suzuki, Hedi Syme and Kaitlyn Burke all scored for the Cougars as they outshot the Griffins 35-27.

The Griffins lone goal came on a powerplay in the third period, one of ten chances on the man advantage given up by the Cougars, who were shorthanded for a third of the game.

Kendall Kilgour turned away 26 of the 27 shots she faced, and continues to play well between the pipes for the Cougars.

Head coach Scott Rivett felt like it was the best 60 minutes his team has played all year.

"On saturday I felt we played our best game of the season to date, as we played with a lot of energy and competed the way we need to in order to be successful for 60 minutes. We had to overcome a little adversity which helped keep our team focused and involved throughout the entire game as we received contributions from our entire line up once again,” said Rivett.

The Cougar’s next game is November 4th, where they will visit the Red Deer College Queens.

The Cougars return home to Flames Community Arenas on November 5th to play the Queens in the second game of their home-and-home series. Puck drops at 8:45 p.m.
