Lose to Trojans

With only one game on the weekend schedule, the Cougar men’s hockey team was looking to gain some ground on the SAIT Trojans and leap frog into first place in the standings, the only problem was the Trojans had other ideas.

Fielding a shortened bench on Friday due to injuries the Cougars could move into a tie for first place with the Trojans with a win. A loss would leave the team four points back, with three games left before the winter break.

The Trojans would be the first to score on Friday, as 16 minutes into the first period Robert Nocera took a feed from Steven Turner and beat Cougars goalie Justin Cote to make it 1-0 Trojans.

The Cougars would respond in the second, as former Trojans’ defender Jessie Tresierra fittingly scored his first goal of the season against his former team to even the score at 1-1.
With the score even heading into the third, the Trojans would get a break, as Shane Lust stripped a Cougars defenceman at the teams blue line, firing a shot past Cote to make it 2-1.
Lust would add another marker late in the period, to give the Trojans the insurance goal and the 3-1 victory.

Backup netminder Scott Orth was impressive for the Trojans, stopping 35 total shots in only his second game this season, while Cougars goalie Justin Cote, dropped only his second game of the year, registering 31 saves in defeat.

With only one game slated for the weekend, the Cougars used Saturday to get some much needed rest, as the team battles a rash of injuries as of late, only rolling our three offensive lines in Friday’s game.

Next up for the Cougars is a pair of home games versus the Briercrest Clippers, whom they’ve beaten and tied already this season.

Game time for Friday is 7:30 p.m. while Saturday’s puck drop is set for 2:00 p.m. both at Flames Community Arenas.
