Second straight weekend sweep

The Mount Royal Cougars men’s hockey team continues to roll.

A weekend after sweeping a pair of games versus the Grant MacEwan Griffins, the Cougars continued to pile up the wins, extending their season best winning streak to four games downing the Augustana Vikings on Friday and Saturday.

Friday night’s 4-2 win was a battle of special teams, as five of the games seven goals came with the man-advantage.

Jason MacDonald added two of the Cougars powerplay markers, while teammates Jordon, Harrison, Joe Vetere and Barry Horman all added in two assists.

The Cougars showed great resiliency throughout the contest, coming back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to earn the win.

The Cougs’ took control of the game with only ten minutes remaining in the third, as Voyageurs defenceman Shawn Shackleton took a cross-checking penalty to put the Cougars on the man-advantage.

Vinnie Muchalla would end up netting the game winning goal, and Carey Koroluk would also tally late, to propel the Cougars to their third straight victory.

Backstopping the win in goal was Justin Cote, making 17 saves as the Cougars outshot the Voyageurs 34-19.

In Saturday afternoon’s matinee, the Voyageurs looked overmatched, as the Cougars netted four-second period goals on their way to a 7-0 whitewashing of the opposition.
Brad Goss was the main catalyst for the Cougars offence, recording his first career ACAC hat-trick, earning him Player of the Game honours for his goal scoring outburst.

Meanwhile, Jason MacDonald continued his hot streak, registering another two goals, while Jordon Harrison continued to dish out assists, recoding another three helpers to give him five assists on the weekend.

Coleton Thielmann added a goal and two assists in the winning effort, while goalie Dan Spence earned his first shutout of the season, as he turned aside 26 shots, to improve to 3-0-1 in four starts this season.

With the pair of wins, the Cougars now improve to 7-0-1 on the season, good for top spot in the ACAC with 16 points.

The season continues to roll right along, as the team prepares for a Friday/Saturday double dip versus the Augustana Vikings.

The Cougars will head down to Camrose on Friday night, before returning to Flames Community Arenas on Saturday night for the re-match. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
