Cougars take two versus Griffins

The Mount Royal Cougars are starting to show some consistency.

The Cougar men’s hockey team hadn’t posted a multi-win weekend yet this season, but that all changed as they beat the Grant MacEwan Griffins twice this weekend to move to
5-1-0-2 on the season.

Jeremy Roberts had two goals and an assist, Joe Vetere a goal and two assists, and Barry Horman had three helpers of his own to help the Cougars beat the Griffins 7-2.

The Cougars have had a tough time staying out of the penalty box recently, but on Friday they took only two minor penalties and really showed what they were capable of, playing great 5-on-5 hockey and completely dominating the opposition.

Justin Binab added a goal and an assist, and Coleton Thielmann, Jason MacDonald and Darnell Glass each scored solo tallies for the Cougars.

Netminder Justin Cote stopped 19-21 shots for the Cougs, who outshot the opposition
59-21.

Joe Vetere and Jeremy Roberts love playing the MacEwan Griffins.

One night after thumping the Griffins 7-2, Vetere notched three assists, and Roberts had a goal and an assist to lead the Cougars to a 5-2 victory at home Saturday night.

Dan Spence started in net for the Cougars, and faced only 17 shots in the win.

While a night earlier the Cougars showed off their ability to play strong 5-on-5 hockey, it was the power play that really paid off for the Cougars on Saturday.

Four of five Cougar goals came with the man-advantage as the Griffins became increasingly frustrated with their inability to move the puck effectively against the Cougars.

Coleton Thielmann, Bradley Goss, Barry Horman and Jordon Harrison also scored for the Cougars.

The Cougars will play twice at home next weekend as they welcome the Portage College Voyageurs. The first game is Friday, Nov.5th at Flames Community Arenas puck drops at 7:30 pm, while on Saturday, Nov.6th the Cougars and Voyageurs will meet for part two of the double-dip at 2:00 p.m.
