Two wins as weather takes toll

Back in action for the first time in 2011, the Mount Royal Cougars volleyball teams’ both started off the campaign on the right foot, registering a pair of straight set victories over the Augustana Vikings on Friday.

Cougar Women
Breanna Estabrook was back in form, reigning down 13 kills and three service aces, as the Cougars won 25-17, 25-17 and 25-5.

Meanwhile, Mackenzie Allen, Paige Dean, Megan MacLean and Brianna Fehr all added in at least two service aces a piece, as the Cougars service game overpowered the Vikings, as the team tallied 14 aces on the night.

On Saturday, the Cougars and Vikings were set to rematch in Camrose, but due to road closures on Highway 2, the game was cancelled and postponed to a later date.

With the one set match win, the Cougar women continued their reign of terror, improving to a league best 11-0, while the Vikings fell to 0-11. Rescheduled match dates will be available in the coming days.

Cougar Men
Looking to get off the schneid after ending 2010 with a pair of losses, the Cougar men returned to the floor on Friday with a win on their minds - and win they did.

With three players reaching double-digits in kills, including Will Young (10), Lucas Stepanko (12) and Dan Durham (15) the Cougars easily cruised to a three set victory, winning 25-15, 25-17 and 25-19.

Teammate Brandon Hewwing, who’s appeared in only two matches this season was also solid, contributing four kills and four solo blocks.

With the match win, the Cougars inched closer to the .500 mark, sitting at 5-6 through 11 matches.

With no Saturday game due to weather, the two teams will reschedule their match to a later date still to be determined.

Both Cougars teams will get a bye week, before getting back on the court on Friday January 21st and Saturday January 22nd. The Cougars will play host on the 22nd to the Grant MacEwan Griffins on Mount Royal’s Kenyon Court – game time is schedule for 6:00 p.m. for the men and 8:00 p.m. for the women.
