ACAC South Regional roundup

ACAC South Regional play was underway at the Paradise Canyon Golf and Country Club in Lethbridge, Alberta this past weekend as the top golfers from the ACAC south division teed off for their chance to compete in the ACAC championship.

The Mount Royal University Cougars were well represented at the regional’s, with a total of nine men’s golfers and three women taking part in the two day event.

Leading the charge for the Cougar men, were Ryan Tofani (70-77-147) and Jeremy Vold (67-80-147) who tied for third place overall with a combined two day total of 147.

Not far behind were Wallace O’Neill (72-77-149), Nathan Schurr (77-73-150), Gerry McDonald (77-74-151) and Seiji Miyazoe (75-76-151).

On the women’s side of the draw, Lauren Schmidek was impressive as she took home first place overall with a 174, four strokes ahead of teammate Maddy Pedersen who finished in second with a 178  total over the two days. The Cougars Katie Benoit (97-97-194) finished in ninth place in the ladies draw.

Head Coach Brock Balog says the tournament was a good warm up and eye opener for the team.

“I think the tournament was a win for the team,” says Balog. “We played pretty good golf, but it was a great awakening for our squad, as MacEwan University is looking strong and ready to compete. We saw their best, it’s time to tighten it up and defend the championship on our home course in two weeks.”

Last season, the Cougars won the ACAC Championship by 30 strokes over the Grant MacEwan Griffins, but with a solid showing at the south regional’s, the Cougars will have to rise to the occasion if they wish to defend their ACAC title.

The Cougars will head to the ACAC North Regional’s September 26 & 27th hosted by Red Deer College at the Riverbend Golf & Country Club, before the ACAC Championship gets underway on the Cougars home course, Wintergreen GCC September 30th & October 1st.
