When it comes to women’s hockey, there’s really only one word to describe the Mount Royal Cougars....Complete.
From top to bottom, this team has all the makings of the next ACAC champion as they continue to outshine the opposition on a nightly basis. Already leading the MacEwan Griffins 1-0 in their best-of-five series, the Cougars played another gem on Wednesday night, beating the Griffins 3-0 behind Leanne Pfliger’s 22 saves and taking a stranglehold on the opening round series.
Sara sharp led the way with a two point night (1G, 1A) and Hedi Syme and Taralynn Suzuki also scored in a complete 60 minute effort to put the Griffins on the brink of elimination.
Sharp opened the scoring at 16:03 of the first period, taking a Chelsey Morrill offering and burying it home, leaving little chance for the Griffin netminder.
Suzuki made it 2-0 just past the six minute mark with Sharp playing the role of playmaker this time around. The Griffins looked overmatched from the opening whistle and never truly threatened the Cougars in this one. Syme extended the lead to three as she converted on a Tanika Dawson feed, and the Cougars cruised the rest of the way to the win.
The Cougars outshot the Griffins 33-22.
The two teams will play again at the Flames Community Arenas on Friday, March 4th as the Griffins try to avoid getting swept by the top-seeded Cougars. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
The winner of this series will meet the winner of the SAIT/NAIT series in the ACAC finals.
