Our story
In September 2002, Recreation opened newly renovated facilities to Mount Royal students, alumni, employees and the general public.
The renovated facility meets the University's goal to enhance the quality of campus life with optimally-designed spaces for academic physical education programs, varsity competition, student and employee recreation, as well as serving the recreation needs of the surrounding community.
Built around an existing gymnasium and pool, the 180,000 sq. ft. facility incorporates bright, airy spaces, a logical pedestrian-traffic plan and warm, vibrant colors. The addition encompasses a 14,000 sq. ft fitness center, six squash courts, a five-lane 200 metre running track, a 40 ft. climbing wall and a bouldering wall, as well as classrooms, dance and aerobic studios, expanded locker room facilities, steam rooms, a hot tub and academic and recreation facility offices.
The centerpiece of the new facility is the three-court gymnasium for basketball and volleyball that triples spectator capacity of the existing gym. Sport surfaces are of premium grade; the center court in the triple gymnasium is designed and constructed to meet the international competition standards of FIVB and FIBA. The gym floor is the only one of its kind in Alberta, incorporating EPDM pads supporting the maple floor, with all design features serving to increase athletic performance.
Natural light was maximized by installing skylights and placing large open spaces adjacent to the exterior and clerestory windows at the climbing wall and entry. Windows around activity and training areas provide views of the campus and Convocation lawn. Coloured glass panels surrounding the gym produce a kaleidoscope of colour patterns on the running track on sunny days.
Recreation is here to help you meet your health and fitness goals. We offer activities such as intramural leagues, dance classes, personal training, first aid & CPR certification courses, swim lessons, martial arts, climbing and fitness classes just to name a few, all designed to cater to your lifestyle and recreation preferences.
