Get Started the Olympic Way

A study of gold-medal winning Olympians found that they developed seven consistent mental traits that led to their success.

Follow these traits to help you achieve your goals:

  1. High Motivation
Set goals, work hard, and don't give up.
  2. Optimism
Expect difficulties but after setbacks get back into your routine.
  3. Positive perfectionism
Set high standards. Be well organized. Don't obsess about mistakes.
  4. Ability to focus
Learn to quiet the mind and focus intensely on what you can or cannot control.
  5. Ability to manage skills
Evaluate potential life and athletic stresses and prepare for them.
  6. Mental toughness
Make a list of your strengths, your goals and why you can achieve them. Review the list often.
  7. Sport intelligence
Learn from others, but figure out what works best for you.
