Become a Red Cross Swim Instructor
Step 1: Assistant Water Safety Instructor
This course consists of two parts:

Part 1: This 30 hour course covers the foundation of instructional skills. Course dates listed below.

Part 2: Upon completion of Part 1, each candidate must successfully complete eight hours of assistant teaching and eight individua study assignments. Arrangements for assistant teaching will be discussed in Part 1. However, it is the responsibility of each participant to arrange assistant teaching at a facility of their choosing. Part 2 will need to be completed within six months of completing Part 1.

Prerequisite(s): 15+ years recommended Swim Kids – Level 10 or equivalent.

Step 2: Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
This course consists of two parts:

Part 1: This 25 hour course further develops instructional skills by focusing on the ability to plan and teach the Red Cross Swim program, including the Adult/Teen program. Course dates listed below.

Part 2: Upon completion of Part 1, each candidate must successfully complete 12 hours of assistant teaching. Arrangements for assistant teaching will be discussed in Part 1. However, it is the responsibility of each participant to arrange their assistant teaching at a facility of their choosing. Part 2 will need to be completed within six months of completing Part 1.

Prerequisite(s): 16+ years and a current Assistant Water Safety Instructor certification.

Aquatic Recertifications
Red Cross: Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
Refresh and learn new, updated information for your WSI. WSI candidates must recertify their award prior to its two year expiry date for it to remain active. Candidates whose award is past the one year grace period will need to take the original course again.

Prerequisite(s): Proof of certification must be presented to the instructor at the recertification.

Lifesaving Society – NLS Recertification
National Lifeguard (NLS) recertification tests all NLS skill items and provides any updated information. NLS candidates must recertify their award prior to its two year expiry date for it to remain active. NLS candidates whose award is past the two year period may still recertify if they have held the award in the past five years.

Prerequisite(s): Proof of certification must be presented to the instructor at the recertification.
