Tips for students

The Office of Student Conduct (OSC) is responsible for ensuring that expectations regarding academic and non-academic behavior are observed by Mount Royal's student community.

When allegations of misconduct occur, Mount Royal's Code of Student Conduct states that all students are to be treated consistently and objectively, and the OSC ensures that this is adhered to in practice.


Tips for avoiding misconduct:

  • Educate yourself on institutional and faculty policies regarding plagiarism, cheating, and acceptable formats for citing academic sources (APA, MLA, etc.).
  • You may find that individual instructors will differ in their expectations regarding formatting and citation requirements. Speak with your instructors about what is considered acceptable, including limits on quotation without citation, collaborative work, mobile devices in class, and expectations during exams. You will receive a course outline or syllabus at the beginning of each semester in each class you take that should help explain these academic requirements and restrictions.
  • Take advantage of supports offered by Student Learning Services, such as workshops on APA and MLA referencing, paraphrasing, time management and planning papers.  You can also make an appointment with Writing and Learning Strategist to get individual help.
  • Drink responsibly and avoid using illegal substances on campus.
  • When faced with a situation that could lead to conflict, contact Security Services rather than engaging directly.

  • To have classroom standards for both academic and non-academic misconduct communicated in a clear and unambiguous manner and applied consistently and fairly. Do not assume that all professors or faculties have the same expectations regarding formatting and citation - standards will vary.
  • To have consequences for an alleged breach of academic or non-academic misconduct communicated in a clear and unambiguous manner. 
  • To be presumed not to have committed academic or non-academic misconduct until impartial members of the Mount Royal community have established, on a balance of probabilities, that misconduct has occurred.
  • To have his or her case adjudicated within a reasonable time. Should a hearing occur, students are entitled to sufficient notice and description of the allegation; reasonable notice of the time, place and nature of the hearing; reasonable opportunity to respond; and receipt of the decision in writing, including any sanctions arrived at under the Code of Student Conduct.
  • To be informed of and have access to the services of theStudents’ Association of Mount Royal University (SAMRU) when required or requested. This includes having a designated SAMRU representative present at a hearing or appeal, if requested. In the case of students for whom SAMRU representation is not mandated (i.e. credit-free students), another individual may accompany them.
  • To choose whether or not to provide evidence or be a witness in a hearing, or to call witnesses and to personally question any witnesses called.
  • To have access to appeal procedures under the Code of Student Conduct.

Student responsibilities:

  • To be aware of classroom standards for both academic and non-academic conduct.
  • To become familiar with the Code of Student Conduct and behave in accordance with it and all other policies, rules and regulations at Mount Royal.
  • To become familiar with the various formats commonly used in academic writing, including APA and MLA.
  • To uphold the values of integrity and personal responsibility in all aspects of the post-secondary experience.

Meeting with instructors

When your instructor has asked you to meet to discuss work that you have submitted:

  1. Before you meet with your instructor, access the services of the Student Advocacy Coordinator, located on the third floor of Wyckham House.
  2. It is in your best interest to arrange to meet with your instructor as soon as possible to attempt to resolve the issue.
  3. You can expect to be treated with respect by your instructor and, in turn, you are expected to treat your instructor with the same courtesy and professionalism.
  4. Understandably, you may be experiencing anxiety or frustration. Keep in mind that you are not being singled out. As a member of faculty, your instructor is obligated to report any academic or non-academic misconduct to the OSC. All of the rights afforded to students at Mount Royal will be afforded to you, and you will have a chance to explain your side of the story.
  5. The goal of your instructors and of the OSC is to develop your understanding of academic formatting and guidelines so that the same mistake will not be repeated.
