Room Assignment

Room assignment

New residents

Room assignments for new residents will be on a first-come, first-served basis, based on a complete application and receipt of your $400 security deposit.

Returning residents

Current residents can participate in Choose A Room in March for the following year. Details will be sent to you in November.

Returning students who do not participate in Choose A Room will be assigned a room on a first-come, first-served basis, based on a complete application. Security deposits are carried forward.

Room assignment priorities

Assignments for Fall housing are given first to returning residents participating in Choose A Room (learn more).

Assignments for all terms are done for New and Returning Students based on the deposit received date.

Themed Communities

If you select a Themed Community (previously called Living Learning Community) on your application it will be considered your first preference, taking precedence over type of accommodation as well as roommate choice. If you want to live with a specific roommate within a Themed Community, please make sure the roommate also selects the same Themed Community.

Requesting a roommate

If you and a friend wish to be roommates you must select each other in the Residence Portal. Instructions on how to do this will be emailed to you once we receive your security deposit. Roommates must be selected by June 15 in order for us to accommodate your request.

Please note that once a wait list has begun for Residence, students placed from the wait list are placed into the first available space and it is less likely that we will be able to accommodate roommate requests at this time in the assignments process.

Gender inclusive housing

Residence Services is dedicated to creating an inclusive community for everyone living in our buildings. At Mount Royal University, students are NOT assigned to their residence unit based on gender. All residence units (apartments & townhouses) are open to all gender identities and expressions. This means that residents may be assigned to a unit with roommates of a gender identity different from their own.

If you prefer to live in a unit of the same gender, please select your gender during the application process and you will be assigned to a unit based on the gender you selected.

Please know that selecting a gender will NOT impact the status of your application. For more information please contact Residence Services at residence@mtroyal.ca.

Room assignment confirmation

You will be advised of your room assignment in June (Fall semester), November (Winter semester), and April (Spring semester).

All correspondence will be sent to the email address listed on your application. Ensure that our email address - residence@mtroyal.ca - is added to your contacts or safe list to prevent our correspondence from being automatically deposited in a junk mail folder and deleted.

You may also log in to the Residence Portal any time after that to view your assignment and roommate details.

Requesting a room change

A room change freeze is in effect for the first month of each semester to give residents a chance to get to know their roommates and become comfortable with living in residence.

We understand that conflicts sometimes arise. Residence Services strongly encourages you to talk to your roommates and your RA about your concerns first. If you still wish to request a room change, you can download a room change request form or pick one up at the Residence Services Front Desk in West Residence Building B.

Once a room change is approved, you will be notified by email or phone to pick up your new keys on the approved date. You will have a couple days —usually a weekend— to move your belongings and do a proper check-out of your old room. If the keys to your old room are not returned on the specified date following the move, you will be charged Residence fees for occupying both rooms.
