When to move out
You must vacate residence 24 hours after your last exam or noon of the last day of your contract, whichever comes first.
Please note you are financially responsible for residence fees, as per the Accommodation Agreement, until the end of your contract. Please review your contract for cancellation policies.
In preparation for the move out period, your RA will meet with you and your roommates to discuss any cleaning and damage to common areas, as well as your move out date according to your exam schedule. On the date of your move-out, you must return the keys to the office to ensure that you will not be charged for these keys.
Checking out properly
Whether you are vacating residence mid-semester or at the end of your contract, you must follow check-out procedures. These are listed on the back of your check in report and sent to your mailboxes near the end of the semester of your contract.
Note: You don’t check out properly and turn in your keys, you will be charged $100 for your bedroom key (to change locks) and $25 for the mail box key, as well as any additional residence fees and damage costs.
Moving out at the end of the semester
Step 1: Lock your room and return the keys to the office to ensure that you will not be charged for missing keys.
Step 2: Staff will inspect units to assess damage and cleaning concerns.
Step 3: Notices of any charges will be sent to the address on the student account.
During the semester
Provide written notice to the Residence office with your withdrawal paperwork from the Registrar's office to terminate your contract during the semester.
Getting your security deposit back
Damages to your bedroom or your unit’s common areas will be noted on your check-out form. Maintenance staff will assess the unit and determine if there are to be any cleaning or damage charges. If charges are assessed, you will be sent a notice within two to three weeks. Appeals of damage assessments must be made by the deadline listed in dates and deadlines. There is a minimum charge of $50 per person for any cleaning or damage assessed to the unit.
Please note costs for damages to common areas will be split evenly among all roommates, unless the party or parties responsible have been previously identified.
To avoid the likelihood of damage charges, see the move-out condition information sheet for helpful suggestions.
Once the security deposit is released, the Fees Office will send a cheque to the address on file at Mount Royal. Make sure your address is current. If your deposit was paid by a credit card, the security deposit will be credited to the card.
Because a cheque in Canadian funds may not be best for international students moving out of the country, you may submit your credit card information to the Residence Services office and the security deposit refund will be applied to the credit card.
