Red Cross Swim Kids

No classes: Feb. 14 – 20
10 level program for children five years of age and older.Red Cross: Swim Kids
This program for school aged children will help swimmers develop all five swimming strokes (front and back crawl, elementary back stroke, breast stroke, sidestroke), actively learn how to be safe around the water and increase their fitness and endurance through fun activities. Children will be challenged to achieve personal bests in distance and time, which will be a strong motivator through all 10 levels.

Swim Kids – Level 1
Level 1 is an orientation to the water and the pool area with an introduction to floats and glides with kick. Endurance is built by working on a five metre front swim. This level may be combined with Level 2 classes.

Swim Kids – Level 2
Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and surface support.  They work on a five metre front swim and learn about deep water activities and proper use a Personal Flotation Device (PFD).  This level may be combined with Level 1 classes.

Prerequisite(s): 5+ years and successful completion of Red Cross Swim Kids – Level 1, Red Cross Swim Preschool Sunfish or equivalent program.

Swim Kids – Level 3 
Introduces front crawl and diving, swimmers also learn how to make wise choices on where and when to swim.  Endurance is built by a 15 metre swim.

Prerequisite(s): 5+ years and successful completion of Red Cross Swim Kids – Level 2, Red Cross Swim Preschool Crocodile/Whale or equivalent program.

Swim Kids – Level 4

Front crawl, back glide and shoulder roll for back crawl are developed. Children work on kneeling dives, surface support and endurance is built by a 25 metre swim.

Prerequisite(s): 5+ years and successful completion of Red Cross Swim Kids – Level 3 or equivalent program.

Swim Kids – Level 5
Level 5 – Back crawl and safe boating skills are introduced along with sculling and whip kick on the back. Children try stride dives and endurance is developed through dolphin kick and a 50 metre swim.

Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of Red Cross Swim Kids –Level 4 or equivalent program.

Swim Kids – Level 6

Level 6 – Front and back crawl are refined and the elementary back stroke is introduced. Ice safety, throwing assists, treading water and the front dive are introduced. Endurance is built to a 75 metre swim.

Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of Red Cross Swim Kids –Level 4 or equivalent program.

Swim Kids – Level 7
Level 7 – Continues to build skills for front crawl, back crawl and elementary back stroke, and introduces whip kick on the front. Children learn about airway and breathing obstructions and treading water. Endurance is built to a 150 metre swim.

Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of Red Cross Swim Kids – Level 6 or equivalent program.

Swim Kids – Level 8

Breaststroke, foot-first surface dives and rescue entries are introduced. Children learn the dangers of open water, hypothermia and rescue breathing on children and adults. Endurance is built to a 300 metre swim.

Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of Red Cross Swim Kids – Level 7 or equivalent program.

Swim Kids – Level 9

Front and back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke continue to be refined. Children also work on head-first shallow dives, standing dives, learn about wise choices and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built to a 400 metre swim.

Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of Red Cross Swim Kids – Level 8 or equivalent program.

Swim Kids – Level 10
Refines all of the strokes, with an introduction to butterfly and scissor kick. Children learn about sun safety and ice rescue of others. Endurance is built to a 500 metre swim.

Prerequisite(s): Successful completion of Red Cross Swim Kids – Level 9 or equivalent program.
