Volunteer as a Peer Health Educator

Are you interested in educating your classmates about health topics? Do you love to plan events, meet others, come up with creative ideas for marketing and practice healthy behaviours? If so, we invite you to volunteer as a peer health educator.

You’ll learn more about important health issues and you’ll develop teamwork and communication skills by conducting a variety of health education programs. Gain self-confidence and valuable experience in leadership, responsibility, event management, marketing and relationship building as you work with the University community on wellness initiatives.

As a peer health educator, you will:

  • Attend training seminars and monthly meetings
  • Participate in and assist with design and organization of campus programs
  • Design and distribute flyers, pamphlets and promotional materials
  • Educate your peers about health topics and services in the EnCana Wellness Centre
  • Present health topics in a fun and engaging manner

Making a difference

Meet some of our peer health educators:

Faye Ho: I am a third year Nursing student, and I am in my third year as a Peer Health Educator. Besides having fun, I have learned so much about leadership and teamwork. Being a PHE has helped me to be more confident and improve my presenting skills. I have  learned a lot about various health issues and I am glad to be a part of the University's active community. Skills I have acquired as a PHE are not only useful while I am at school, but will help me in my future career as well.

Danae Faszer: Being a Peer Health Educator to me is a great experience. It has given me an opportunity to help out my Mount Royal community in an environment that supports my personal growth while challenging me to develop new skills. I have gotten to know other students on campus that have the same passion for health and community that I do.

Kirby Davis: I am a third year Nursing student, in my first year as a Peer Health Educator, I am a Resident Advisor and the East Community Advisor on campus. I joined the Peer Health Educators because it is a fun, interactive, and great way to meet people and to get involved in campus life. I get to teach people about their health and I learn a lot of important information too! It is great experience for my future career.

Diego Padilla: I am in my first year in the BA program majoring in Psychology, my first year of the Peer Health Education Program, and I also work at the Students’ Association administrating the Diversity Centre. My interests include mental health, sexual diversity, safer sex, and STIs. In the Peer Health Education program I've had the opportunity to get involved in the University community, and educate other people about health issues and how they affect students at Mount Royal.
