Bachelor of Applied Child Studies


About the program

There has been increasing evidence regarding the importance of supporting children's development during the early years. Professionally trained and skilled staff provide ongoing treatment, support and services to children, youth and families in community settings.

The degree draws on the following disciplines

  • Child and Youth Care Counselor, Early Childhood Care, Education, Disability Studies, Social Work, Business, Health Studies
     

Additional Qualifications

  1. Child Studies students also complete the Children's Mental Health Certificate.
    • Certificate highlights:
      • Understanding children's mental health, working with children with mental health problems
      • Working effectively in communities
         
  2. Students are qualified for theiir Child Care Staff Certification (Children and Youth Services) and Out-of-School Care Standards (City of Calgary).
    • We have a diverse group of students
      • Returning Human Services diploma graduates, 
      • Students with previous related work experience
      • Students new to the Human Services field
    • Academic areas of concentration include
      • Program planning and implementation, diversity leadership and management, ethics, children and youth at risk, working with groups, child development and intervention, assessment research and evaluation, child and family policies, computer skills, interview techniques

  • Additional staff coverage during busy times of the year; program development, planning, implementation and evaluation; resource development (i.e. handbooks, manuals, activity planning); child and youth observation and assessment; family assessment (i.e. ecomaps, genograms); community-based research and surveys; diversity programming; group facilitation; play-based program planning; explore situations with a holistic family-based approach
