What kinds of work term opportunities may be available?

Insurance Minor students are able to work in a variety of areas. The scope of responsibility should increase with each work term, possibly starting from front-line support to gain exposure to more demanding positions. Positions may include underwriter trainee, customer service representative, claims trainee, broker assistant and junior risk analyst.

Students may find a work term position in Calgary, throughout Alberta, or across Canada.

How do I prepare for my Co-op work term?

Eligibility Requirements

BBA students interested in pursuing Co-op must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • submit a Co-op Application to Career Services by the deadline; and
  • complete a minimum of 15 courses prior to the first work term (not needed at time of application); and
  • maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0. Preference will be given to students with a GPA of 2.5; and
  • complete the following course requirements:

Orientation to Co-operative Education course

Orientation to Co-op is a professional development course required in preparation for the first work term. This course prepares students to:

  • complete a skills self assessment
  • understand and comply with workplace and employer expectations
  • write competitive, professional resumes and cover letters
  • develop job interview skills
  • network with employers
  • conduct self marketing campaigns

The Orientation to Co-operative Education course is only offered in the Fall semester. Contact the Co-operative Education Coordinator for information.

What about expenses?

By starting to plan now, you can be financially prepared for your work terms. Expenses may  include:

  • Both the Orientation to Co-operative Education course and Co-op work terms are non-credit courses and have course fees attached to them. See the 2011 - 2012 Fee Schedule and Schedule of Classes for more information.
  • Transportation - you will be responsible for your own transportation to and from the work site. Many work terms require the use of a vehicle.
  • Consent to Search and Disclosure of Personal Information (Security Clearance) and a criminal record check may be requested by the employer.
