A variety of excellent Directed Field Studies (DFS) opportunities exist for accounting students in a variety of industries. DFS employers include government, financial services, oil and gas, accounting, insurance, and transportation companies. While most of the work terms positions are located in Calgary, students should be prepared to relocate throughout Alberta or across Canada in order to secure a work term position.

Accounting DFS students have held positions as: Operations Accountants, Accounting Technicians, Accounts Payable Accountants, Joint Venture Accountants, Property Analysts, Royalty Analysts, Corporate Tax Accountants, Tax Technicians, Financial Accounting Assistants, and Junior Accountants.

How do I prepare for my Directed Field Studies?

Directed Field Studies Preparation - Professional Development Seminars:

Professional Development (PD) is a series of work experience preparation seminars. These seminars prepare students to:

  • Complete a skills self-assessment,
  • Understand and comply with workplace and employer expectations,
  • Write professional resumes and cover letters,
  • Develop job interview skills,
  • Network with employers, and
  • Conduct self-marketing campaigns.

PD is a mandatory element of Directed Field Studies (DFS) and accounts for 15% of your DFS I grade. You are not eligible to go out on a DFS I until you have successfully completed PD.

Students' skills, abilities and experience with job hunting are all different. The PD material and assignments are meant to assist students at all levels to achieve and/or maintain a competitive edge in the DFS job competitions. Also, the PD sessions provide students with valuable tools and resources they can apply to their job search when they graduate.

Feedback from DFS employers supports the necessity and value of student participation in professional development classes.

PD is offered in the Fall and Winter semesters. Contact the Work Experience Coordinator for more information.
