How do I prepare for my Directed Field Studies?

Directed Field Studies preparation information is presented through Professional Development seminars.

These seminars prepare students to:

  • Complete a skills self-assessment
  • Write professional resumes and cover letters
  • Develop job interview skills
  • Conduct self-marketing campaigns
  • Understand and comply with workplace and employer expectations

Students' skills, abilities and experience with job hunting are all different. The Professional Development material and assignments are meant to assist students at all levels to achieve and/or maintain a competitive edge in the work term job competition process. The Professional Development sessions will provide students with valuable tools and resources they can apply to their job search after graduation.

The topics presented in the Professional Development sessions are based on feedback from our work term employers.

Professional Development sessions are offered in the fall and winter semesters. Contact the Work Experience Coordinator for more information.

What about expenses?

By starting to plan now, you can be financially prepared for your work terms. Expenses include:

  • Course Fees - see Mount Royal Calendar
  • Transportation - you will be responsible for your own transportation to and from the work site. Some positions will require the use of a personal vehicle
  • Relocation - if you accept a work term position outside of Calgary, you will be responsible for your own relocation and living expenses in that location
  • Police Security Clearance is a requirement for many of the Justice Studies work term positions and may be a condition of employment. In most cases this is an expense that will be incurred by the student.
  • Some positions may require the purchase of specialized equipment.
