Description:

Mount Royal University recently completed a review of its profitable Event and Theatre Services operations, with the goal of growing revenues and attracting larger and more complex events to campus.  This review has led to the creation of a new leadership position to develop and implement a growth strategy and to separate strategic leadership from day-to-day operations. 

The Director, Event and Conference Services will provide leadership and strategic direction to a business unit responsible for attracting external events to MRU and coordinating and/or executing logistical and support services that meet or exceed client expectations. The Director is also responsible for building and nurturing positive relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.  

Duties:
  • Provide overall strategic direction and ensure that individual departmental activities align with institutional and divisional priorities.
  • Provide visible leadership to all members of the ECS team by demonstrating professionalism and ethical behavior at all times.
  • Develop annual business plan and operating budget for Event & Conference Services.
  • Mentor, guide and provide leadership and advice to Event & Conference Services management team and support staff.
  • Provide relevant learning opportunities that enable employees to enhance their capacity to perform at a higher level, to improve performance, and create opportunities for internal advancement.
  • Instill entrepreneurial mind set within management team.
  • Develop management succession plan to identify and develop talent from within, and to identify where external recruiting may be required.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with a variety of external stakeholders.
  • Represent the interests of MRU in various industry associations and on boards and community groups.
  • Negotiate contracts, partnerships and operating agreements.
  • Responsible for appropriate systems and internal controls to meet compliance.
Qualifications:
  • A completed Bachelors Degree program with a minimum of 6 – 10 years of relevant experience.
  • This is a senior leadership position, requiring several years of progressive managerial experience, preferably in a post-secondary, public sector or hospitality/ entertainment industry.
  • Experience in managing significant business process change.
  • Strategic thinking skills, with proven planning and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Effective negotiating skills.
  • Given the nature of this position, a Criminal Records check may be required.
