Description: Reporting directly to the Manager, Bookstore, the Assistant Manager is responsible for developing the annual Retail Plan, and managing the day-to-day retail operations of the Bookstore. The incumbent is accountable for growing sales and profitability of non-course material merchandise lines (MRU clothing and branded merchandise, supplies and stationery, computer software, and sundry items). The incumbent provides direct staff supervision for full-time, part-time and casual staff.

The Assistant Manager is an integral part of the Bookstore management team, working closely with the Bookstore Manager, General Merchandise Supervisor and Supervisor of Learning Materials. The incumbent serves as Acting Bookstore Manager in the absence of the manager.
Duties: The Assistant Manager, Bookstore will be expected to:
• provide daily guidance, leadership and direction to the retail bookstore staff, including hiring, performance management and disciplinary action;
• develop the annual Retail Plan which encompasses all non-course material related merchandise lines; components of the plan include revenue targets by product category, pricing strategies, gross margins, labour costs, and specific retail-related operating costs (advertising & promotion, bank charges, etc);
• identify new products and/or product categories that will grow revenues and gross margins;
• create pricing models for non-course material merchandise, and authorize any markdowns, discounts and deviations from established pricing;
• monitor sales and margins for non-course material categories, and identify any variances to the Retail Plan;
• research and implement latest techniques of buying, selling, merchandising and inventory control;
• be responsible for store layout and merchandise display;
• conduct regular analyses to determine profitability of particular SKU’s, retail locations, merchandising techniques, etc.;
• work some evenings and Saturdays on a pre-determined schedule.
Qualifications: • A Bachelor’s degree in retail management or equivalent.
• 3 - 6 years’ retail management experience.
• Demonstrated success in supervision and human resources management and fiscal management.
• Ability to understand, develop and implement long term strategic plans.
• Excellent problem solving and negotiating skills.
• Budget planning and financial management experience.
• Excellent public relations and customer service skills and the ability to manage conflicts as they arise.
• Must have outstanding written and oral communication skills.
• Knowledgeable in computer software including but not limited to retail inventory management and POS systems, MS, and Adobe Suites.
