Description: Microbiology is delivered online to students pursuing Funeral Service Diploma and Embalmer Certificate programs within Continuing Education. This course introduces students to the world of microbiology and infectious disease including the basis of life processes within the cell and the requirements for growth of various microorganisms. Upon completing the course, students will be expected to critically assess the potential risks associated with the embalming process:
• types, forms, growth requirements and metabolism of microorganisms
• determinants of disease and infection,
• disease prevention and disease processes,
• sterilization processes and common means of combating microbes in the workplace,
• modes of action of antibiotics and chemical anti-microbials, drug resistance in microbes
• function of the human immune system and other defenses.
 
Duties: Design & Development: develop course outline, lesson plans for online delivery with Blackboard e-Education system, written content for course modules/learning units, supplemental learning materials, e-learning interactivities, textbook selection, copyright clearance, student assessments, grading rubrics, and liaise with CHS administration and technical development staff as required.
• Curriculum development work must be completed by December 6, 2013 as the course will be delivered beginning in January 2014
 
Qualifications: • Previous experience writing/developing curriculum for online course delivery or experience teaching in an online format is strongly recommended
• Comprehensive knowledge of microbiology
• Exceptional writing and course design skills
• Excellent presentation, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
• Teaching experience in an adult education environment is preferred
• Proficiency with Blackboard and other learner based technologies is required
• Minimum of Masters of Science (MSc) in a related topic area is required
