Description: Reporting to the General Counsel, this position focuses on agreement review and analysis, agreement drafting, risk assessment and negotiation of a variety of agreements on behalf Mount Royal University. In the context of the Post-Secondary environment, the successful legal professional will understand, assess and address the business needs of various internal stakeholders at Mount Royal University and the parties with whom Mount Royal is contracting, review and/or draft proposed new agreements, advise internal stakeholders of the risks associated with agreements, negotiate with parties contracting with Mount Royal University and suggest and draft changes to the agreements based on risk assessment and business needs.
Duties: Client interaction:
• Building positive and productive business relationships with internal stakeholders and external parties who contract with Mount Royal University
• Understanding business needs and translating those needs into sound written agreements
• Develop learning resources, presentations and training modules for staff and faculty to educate them on relevant law-related topics

Agreement review, analysis and drafting
• Conduct legal research to inform agreement interpretation, as necessary
• Communicate risks/expected outcomes based on agreement interpretations
• Provide timely assistance and advice to operations staff and management on agreement, insurance and risk management issues
• Draft appropriate agreement clauses and provide alternative language for agreements
• Draft agreements when no suitable template exists
• Assist in the development and implementation of best practices in agreement review and analysis
• In consultation with General Counsel, develop agreement templates where appropriate

• Actively negotiate agreement terms and conditions with the legal counsel or agreement specialists of contracting parties
• Assist University management and faculty in the resolution of agreement issues

Risk assessment and business needs review
• Work with Risk Management professionals to ensure agreements balance needs to mitigate risk and exposures with the operational and business needs of divisions/departments/faculties
• Work with internal subject matter experts to ensure all internal stakeholder interests are considered
• Conduct agreement risk assessments on tendered and negotiated agreements to assess risks and exposures and recommend risk mitigation measures
• Stay apprised of current developments in the law to inform agreement drafting, interpretations and legal advice
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
• Law degree (LLB, JD) and an active member of the Law Society of Alberta
• Minimum 3 years demonstrated experience drafting, reviewing, analyzing and negotiating a variety of complex commercial agreements
• A thorough understanding of Alberta and Canadian law, including contract law and legislation governing and commonly consulted in the Post- Secondary environment such as the Post-Secondary Learning Act and Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act
• Knowledge of Agreement Management best practices
• Strong customer service orientation and the ability to build positive, productive business relationships at all levels of the organization
• Exceptional attention to detail combined with keen analytical, communication and negotiation skills
• Self-motivated with strong organization skills, the ability to effectively manage workflow and the ability to meet tight deadlines
• Experience working with or in the Post- Secondary environment is an asset
• Experience practicing Labour and Employment law is an asset
