Funeral Service

Mount Royal University’s Funeral Service Education programs prepare you for an entry-level position in the funeral service profession. The majority of our courses are delivered online enabling you to interact with fellow students and learn from expert instructors in an interactive environment. You will participate in virtual classrooms and discussion boards, assessments and final exams.

Students residing outside Alberta - please check with your Provincial Regulatory Board for guidelines and regulations on completing the practical work experience components within your province. Also see 'Licensing' below.

Each province has its own licensing regulations governing the funeral service profession.  Contact the licensing agency for the province in which you intend to work to ensure completion of these programs will meet licensing requirements. Our programs meet the academic and work experience requirements set forth by the Alberta Funeral Service Regulatory Board for licensing.

Licensing in the Province of Alberta 

Graduates must be sponsored by an Alberta funeral home to be licensed as a Funeral Director and/or Embalmer. To be employed in the funeral profession in Alberta, you must also have a police information check and a non-graduated Class 5 driver's license. Licensing requirements are subject to change at the discretion of the Alberta Funeral Services Regulatory Board (AFSRB).  Licensing inquiries should be directed to the AFSRB at 1.800.563.4652.

Licensing in the Province of Saskatchewan

Mount Royal University offers a funeral service education program that is approved by the Funeral and Cremation Services Council of Saskatchewan (Council). Once enrolled in a Mount Royal Funeral program, Saskatchewan students must submit Embalmer/Funeral Director Student Registration Application to the Council. Please direct all licensing questions directly to the Council.  

Delivery
  • Start online courses in September or January (application required)
  • Work Experience courses completed at a licensed funeral home of your choice

Funeral Service Diploma Funeral Director Certificate Embalmer Certificate
  • Prepare to license as a Funeral Director and Embalmer
  • Complete within a minimum of 1 year to a maximum of 6 years
  • Study full-time or part-time
  • Diploma (and dual license) is the preferred credential with many funeral homes
  • Concentrate on Funeral Directing only
  • Complete within a minimum of 1 year to a maximum of 6 years
  • Study part-time
  • Specialize in embalming and restorative arts
  • Complete within a minimum of 1 year to a maximum of 6 years
  • Study part-time
