If you are interested in creating a comic book or graphic novel, this program is designed to offer practical, hands-on experience creating comics and graphic novels in this growing industry.  Layout, illustration, character creation, story-telling, editing, self-publishing and marketing will be the key topics covered.

 

  • Identify various layout strategies.
  • Explain the different layouts and learn storytelling.
  • Demonstrate and enhance drawing skills.
  • Create a variety of illustrations.
  • Adapt scripts to various comic layouts.
  • Identify ways to self-publish your work.
  • Practice editing.
  • Complete the 5 required courses (67 hours)
  • Can be completed within 1 year, up to a maximum of 3 years.

Introduction to Comics and Graphic Novels
Both Comics and Graphic Novels can be used to tell fictional and non-fictional stories. Learn about the history of the Comic and Graphic Novel industry as well as the process of creating a Comic or Graphic Novel.

Story Creation
In this course you will learn how to create a sound story. You will practice scriptwriting, drawing thumbnails, designing characters and how to develop relationships between those characters.

Drawing
Practice your drawing techniques. Learn new techniques to better show emotion and action. Penciling, inking, lettering and colouring will also be covered.

Editing and Layout
Learn about the layout of Comics and Graphic Novels so that your audience will be able to easily follow and read through your story. Explore various techniques for layout as well as variations in panel layout, flow and streamlining of your story.

Publishing and Promotion
Most Comic and Graphic Novelists must employ self-promotion to get their material to the public. You will learn about various ways to fund and promote your story including print and online formats. Learn about marketing your work and developing swag for Expos.
