Trained staff is vital to providing a developmentally appropriate environment for children attending day care. The Child Care Leadership Certificate is designed to prepare child care professionals to work effectively in human service organizations.

Gain skills in child care administration including program planning and evaluation, interviewing skills, policies and issues, ethics and ethical issues, as well as leadership. Blended delivery of this program, which combines evening/weekend classes with online learning, allows you to complete courses while you continue to work. Alberta Accreditation Professional Development funds can be used to cover program and textbook costs.

Requirements
Canadian high school diploma or equivalent. Diploma in Early Child Care Education or equivalent.

Earning Your Certificate
Complete the five required courses (240 hours) listed in the schedule above with a minimum grade of C and 80% attendance in each course.

Career Outlook
The Child Care Leadership Certificate provides flexible and appropriate education opportunities for graduates of the Early Child Care Diploma and employees of child care centres. Above-average growth for child care positions is projected for the next few years. This certificate program with its laddering opportunities to credit studies can help students become qualified employees in the child care industry.

Required Courses

Child Care Leadership: Program Planning & Evaluation
Increase your knowledge and skills in management. Understand the steps for conducting a program needs assessment as well as the steps in the program development cycle using the Logic Model. Apply these techniques in each of the programming steps and demonstrate your ability to plan and evaluate programs.

Child Care Leadership: Interviewing Skills
Gain an understanding of the interview process as it applies to working with diverse populations of children, youth and adults. Be introduced to the basic concepts and models that underlie interviewing and counselling skills. Practice your new interviewing techniques and skills in role-play simulations.

Child Care Leadership: Policies and Issues
Examine the process by which social policy is developed in Alberta and Canada and understand the ways in which the process of policy development can be influenced. Review and analyze social problems, policies and issues as they relate to the delivery and development of appropriate local, provincial and national services.

Child Care Leadership: Ethical Issues
Consider some basic ethical issues and dilemmas. Identify and recognize the complexity in ethical decision making from an individual and a group perspective, and review the historical and philosophical foundation of ethics. Evaluate your personal approach to ethical decision making and identify strategies for incorporating it into your professional practice.

Child Care Leadership: Management & Leadership
Examine the central question of “What do leaders do when they lead?” Explore theories and practices of leadership, developing an understanding of how and why leaders act the way they do. Examine the unique role of leaders in human service practice.
